Milwaukee Catholic Worker Gives Key Peace Address at Marian U

MILWAUKEE, WI--Patrick Kennelly, a Catholic Worker from Casa Maria Hospitality House in Milwaukee will be the key speaker at Marian University’s International Day of Peace at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Dorcas Chapel.  Kennelly is also associate director of the Marquette University Center for Peacemaking.

The presentation, titled "Non-Violent Solutions in Afghanistan," is sponsored by Marian University's Social Justice Committee.

The presentation focuses on Kennelly's travels with a peace delegation to Afghanistan in March 2011 where he participated in a week of peacemaking organized by the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers and Voices for Creative Nonviolence. He will share his stories to increase awareness of the struggles in Afghanistan with hopes for peace in the future.

"We are happy to welcome Patrick Kennelly, who participated in a peace delegation to strengthen the links between Afghan and American civilians and NGO's engaged in nonviolent peacemaking and working for human rights," said John Morris, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry and physical science at Marian, in a news release. "He also participated in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony with Afghan peacemakers to communicate their rooted commitment to nonviolent, life-giving options and to repairing the destruction from years of war."

This year marks the 30th anniversary of International Day of Peace, which was established by the United Nations in 1981.

This event is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact social justice co-chair John Morris at jmorris@marianuniversity.edu or at (920) 923-7140.
