Freedom for Bradley Manning

AMSTERDAM--Thirty demonstrators occupied the entrance to the U.S. Consulate in support of accused whistle-blower Bradley Manning on August 1.  Frits ter Kuile of the Amsterdam Catholic Worker explained to the gathering crowd how Manning had been imprisoned and tormented in prison for more than a year after classified material was released by Wikileaks, an international non-profit organization that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers.

Manning was arrested in Iraq in May 2010 after the Wikileaks released the video “Collateral Murder.”  The video showed American soldiers in a combat helicopter shooting and killing eighteen citizens and employees of the Reuters news agency in Iraq.

After waving banners and placards and posing for a small army of photographers, the protesters took signatures on a petition calling for Manning’s.  The petition was handed to U.S. Consulate officer Stuart Wilson, who promised to deliver it.  The solidarity action ended with a cacophony of whistles, bells and cheered that resounded through the halls of the Consulate.
